On March 27, 2026, Texas Tech formally announced the renaming of its softball facility to Tracy Sellers Field, recognizing former Red Raider softball student-athlete Tracy Sellers and her family’s significant impact on the program. Sellers, who competed for Texas Tech from 2001-03, and her husband, John, have played a major role in supporting Red Raider Athletics through philanthropic giving, including contributions to the Red Raider Club, NIL support, and capital improvements that have helped elevate Texas Tech Softball in recent years.

The announcement also reflects the Sellers family’s direct investment in the facility itself. Prior to the 2026 season, the stadium received several upgrades, including a new awning and protective netting down both baselines, made possible in part through the family’s generosity. Texas Tech framed the renaming as a tribute not only to Tracy Sellers’ legacy as a former student-athlete, but also to the family’s continued commitment to helping provide a championship-level experience for current and future Red Raiders.

Originally opened in 2001 following the reinstatement of Texas Tech Softball in 1996, the venue had previously been known as Rocky Johnson Field, named in honor of former Texas Tech University System Board of Regents chairman James L. “Rocky” Johnson. Texas Tech noted that future signage at the facility will also honor the stadium’s history and Johnson’s longstanding contributions to the athletics department.

Facility History

Tracy Sellers Field, the home of Red Raider softball team since the 2001 season, is now one of the finest softball venues in the Big 12 after several renovations have been completed in the decade that followed. Softball was reinstated at Texas Tech beginning with the inaugural season of the Big 12 in 1996.

The inclusion of a state-of-the-art team facility which includes an indoor hitting facility, offices, locker rooms, complete athletic training and equipment storage areas, the luxurious team room can play host to pre-event functions and will serve as an overflow media center during tournaments.

Naming Rights History

In March 2026, Texas Tech officially renamed its softball facility Tracy Sellers Field, honoring former Red Raider softball student-athlete Tracy Sellers and her family for their lasting impact on the program. A Red Raider from 2001-03, Sellers and her husband, John, have played an important role in supporting Texas Tech Softball through philanthropic giving and recent facility enhancements that continue to elevate the student-athlete and fan experience.

The original field was constructed at a cost of $2.5 million and would not have been possible without the generous support of James L. “Rocky” Johnson. A distinguished alumnus of the Rawls College of Business at Texas Tech, Johnson served for many years as CEO of GTE and also as a Texas Tech Regent. The Beverly Pevehouse press box was added prior to the 2001 season and remains one of the top media facilities for the sport in the conference. With two television/radio booths and seating for a dozen media members, the building also has the flexibility to expand because of the ample space behind the primary seating areas.

HISTORY & FACTS

Major renovations to the field and dugout areas were realized in time for the 2009 season and then, in time for the 2010 season, construction concluded on a state-of-the-art indoor facility. The softball complex includes coaching offices, a meeting room, a players' lounge, equipment rooms and locker rooms. In addition, the Red Raider softball team now has the luxury of also working out in their new indoor and outdoor batting cages, thanks to these renovations.

In the summer of 2010, Tracy Sellers Field played host to a weeklong professional series of softball, featuring the Orlando and Chicago franchises who boasted a number of USA national players on their rosters, which culminated in a Saturday evening game of the week on the ESPN family of networks. The more than 2,600 fans in attendance represented the largest crowd to ever attend a softball game on campus.

Prior to the 2012 season, Texas Tech added just over 500 seats to the complex, pushing the facility's official capacity to just under 1,100, one of the largest in the conference. The project, which replaced the grass berms over the first and third base dugouts, allowed for seating to be available all the way down the baselines up until each team's bullpen.

The renovation marks the second for Tech since the facility officially opened in 1999. After three-consecutive trips to the postseason, Tech is now more prepared to be a NCAA Regional site with its increased capacity. Tech still has the ability to add portable seats as needed as well.
